Ryan Mackin Founded Back2Jax Productions With Artist Ownership at the Center

The prevailing logic of the music industry for most of the last century ran something like this: prove yourself first, then negotiate. Get signed, get developed, get heard, then sort out what you gave away to get there. Ryan Mackin built Back2Jax Productions on the opposite premise.

The company, which Mackin launched in 2025 and operates out of Rhode Island, is an independent record label and media enterprise. Its central organizing principle, as the company describes it, is artist ownership: control over recordings, publishing rights, creative direction, and the long-term value of a catalog. These are the pieces that tend to disappear in a standard label agreement before an artist has had a chance to calculate what they are worth.

Mackin spent the year before the formal launch performing under the banner of Ryan Mackin Records, refining the work and building out the process before committing to a structure he could own outright. The move wasn’t improvised. He has described his thinking as a deliberate response to what he sees as the core problem with waiting for outside recognition: by the time it arrives, someone else has already written the terms.

The label’s name carries a specific reference. “Back2Jax,” by the company’s account, reflects a period in Jacksonville, Florida, that Mackin credits with renewing his focus and returning him to active recording. His biography covers several states. Born in Westerly, Rhode Island, he relocated to Florida at sixteen, and it was there that he first began writing and recording, starting with poetry before moving into hip-hop with friends and basic equipment. Jacksonville, as the company describes it, was where the direction came into focus.

The catalog he has assembled under Back2Jax Productions moves across territory without settling into one corner of it. His work blends hip-hop and melodic rap, running from street-level observation on tracks like “Choose Wisely” and “Street Prayers” to more inward material. Collaborations including “The Top (feat. MileaHii)” represent a different register, and the catalog available through the label’s site has grown to include more than two dozen individual tracks.

Before the formal launch of the label, Mackin performed at Webster Hall in New York City, according to a Marquis Who’s Who press release issued in December 2025 that covered his career in detail. He has also played 1904 Music Hall in Jacksonville, by the label’s account. Stage time carries specific practical weight for an independent operation. It builds direct audience relationships that don’t depend on promotional budgets or streaming platform placement, and it is one of the few parts of music infrastructure an independent artist can develop on their own schedule.

Back2Jax Productions describes its services as extending beyond Mackin’s own releases, covering artist development, music marketing, video editing, and cover art design, a framework the label describes as intended to give other artists access to the same ownership model he has built for himself.

In December 2025, Marquis Who’s Who, the biographical reference publisher that has chronicled accomplished professionals since 1899, selected Mackin for inclusion in recognition of his contributions to the music field. The announcement cited his work at the helm of Back2Jax Productions and his path through earlier roles in sales management and modeling before he turned his attention fully to music.

That same month brought significant personal loss. Mackin’s mother, Jennifer, died on December 26, 2025. He released “I’m So Empty” in the period that followed, writing the track in direct response to her death. It is among the more openly emotional pieces in his catalog, and it reflects the autobiographical thread running through a substantial portion of his output. Music has functioned for him, from early on, as the primary medium for working through things that don’t resolve any other way. He has described his daughter as the central motivation behind everything he is building.

Earlier, in December 2024, he had released “It’s Possible,” which the company frames as a declaration of purpose. The reasoning is plain: creative ownership is not something earned by signing it away first, and the standard sequencing of permission before independence can be reversed.

A project called The Foundation Series is listed on the label’s site as forthcoming. Mackin has stated his openness to major label partnerships where values are a genuine match, while making clear that Back2Jax Productions is already operational. The catalog is growing, and he is not waiting.
